• Axie Infinity virtual land plot sells for a record $2.4 million

  • On Wednesday, a virtual land plot in the Axie Infinity NFT game sold for a record price of 550 ether (approximately $2.4 million).

The plot belongs to the “Genesis” land type, which is described as “extremely rare” by Axie Infinity. Genesis land is in the center of the Axie Infinity map and has a maximum of 220 plots.

The plot’s seller is “ArcaChemist,” and the buyer is “Lunacian #789512.”

In Axie Infinity, there are various types of land, including Mystic and Arctic, and they are all referred to as Lunacia. Axies — in-game fantasy creatures required to play the game — call Lunacia home.

Axie Infinity is a popular play-to-earn NFT game in which users earn tokens known as small love potions (SLP), which can be exchanged for cash or other cryptocurrencies.

According to an Axie Infinity spokesperson, Axie land “has entertainment value, social value, and economic value in the form of future resource flows, which is why we are seeing such sales.”

In February, nine plots of land on Axie Infinity were sold for more than 888 ETH (approximately $1.5 million at the time, or nearly $4 million at current prices).

The latest record purchase comes at a time when virtual land is becoming increasingly popular in the blockchain gaming ecosystem. Tokens.com, a Canadian investment firm, purchased virtual land in Decentraland for a record price of $2.5 million in MANA, Decentraland’s native token, earlier this week.
