• Gary Vaynerchuk has bought a CryptoPunk NFT for $3.7 million in Ethereum

  • Gary Vaynerchuk, a wine blogger, media tycoon, and consummate crypto dude, has purchased a CryptoPunk NFT for 1,600 Ethereum. That works out to around $3.7 million.

CryptoPunks is one of the oldest and most valuable NFTs: crypto collectibles that can be purchased and traded as evidence of ownership for files on the internet. The photos are pixelated mugshots designed to be used as avatars on social media networks. There are only 10,000 in all, and each one has a unique set of attributes, some of which are rarer and more valuable than others.

On Etherscan, you can see the transaction.

The buyer was gary.veefriends.eth, an ENS domain name that serves as a shortcut to one of Gary’s wallets, and the seller was “grunar.eth,” an ENS domain name that serves as a shortcut to one of Gary’s wallets.

In a tweet, Vaynerchuk appeared to confirm the transaction.

Vaynerchuk has long been a crypto enthusiast. He even started his own NFT franchise, “VeeFriends.”

Vaynerchuk told us earlier this year that success in the NFT market will not be defined by rapid cash grabs or flashy investments.

“Success [with NFTs] for me will come only if I can execute over the next many decades to construct something truly meaningful,” he stated. “I’m going for something like Scooby Doo or Smurfs. And I believe I am capable of doing so.”

The bid of 1600 ETH by Vaynerchuk for CryptoPunk #2140 is the fourth-highest sum ever paid for a CryptoPunk. Only a few hours later, the third-highest prize was paid: 2,250 ETH ($5.4 million) for CryptoPunk #5217.
