• Hackers Breach Russian Government Website, Launch Shameless Bitcoin Giveaway Scam: File a Complaint

  • According to reports, anonymous hackers compromised a Russian government website in order to launch a Bitcoin (BTC) giveaway scam.

    The malicious actors targeted a website belonging to local government officials in the Russian city of Ryazan.

    The hackers initially advertised the “Ryazani online lottery,” claiming to offer 0.025 C ($1,300) to every visitor who installed a specific application on their device.

    As seen in screenshots of the fraud website published by a local news outlet, the offering was then revised, stating that $1,000 in BTC would be given away to five randomly selected people.

    Data from Chainalysis’ renowned data analytics has been keeping track of where crypto-related scams are growing globally, zooming out from Russia.

    According to Chainalysis, Africa is the world leader in illicit crypto activity, followed by Eastern Europe, which includes Russia.
