• NHL collaborates with Sweet to offer digital collectibles and NFTs

  • The National Hockey League has entered into a multi-year arrangement with non-fungible token (NFT) platform Sweet to launch a digital collectibles marketplace.

During the 2022-2023 season, the NHL will distribute NFTs with never-before-seen video sequences. Sweet will be the official digital collectible marketplace for the NHL, allowing fans to trade and collect NFTs.

The digital treasures will comprise both recent and archival video moments. Past and current NHL players such as Wayne Gretzky, Tie Domi, Sidney Crosby, and Mario Lemieux will be featured on the memorabilia.

This is the first collaboration between the NHL, the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA), and the NHL Alumni Association (NHLAA) to produce films and other collectibles.

The NHL’s declaration follows the acceptance of NFTs by other major league sports organizations, including the NBA, MLB, and NFL.

The marketplace will have gamified aspects as well as the ability for fans to connect with one another.

“Building NFTs and digital collectibles that are really cool, have great design and are scarce and have collectible value is absolutely important, but we’re also thinking about what’s the utility beyond that and about how [digital collectibles] plug into the broader fan experience and what that means for the NHL,” NHL’s senior vice president of global partnerships, David Lehanski said.
