The Perth Heat Will Run on the Bitcoin Standard

The Perth Heat, a major league baseball team in Australia, announced on Wednesday that it will “operate on the bitcoin standard.”

The team, which is one of the most successful in Australia, has partnered with bitcoin payments company Opennode to accept and send Lightning Network-powered bitcoin payments. “The Perth Heat, in collaboration with Opennode, is establishing bitcoin as the new standard for payments and payouts,” the team wrote. According to the press release:

Perth Heat will pay players and staff in bitcoin, accept bitcoin payments for sponsorships, merchandise, and ballpark concessions, and keep bitcoin on the club’s balance sheet.

“We firmly believe that the mindset that bitcoin imparts on network participants will be felt by our players, coaches, staff, and our loyal fan base, and we look forward to setting the bar for how much value a sports organization can bring to a community in the bitcoin age,” Perth Heat CEO Steven Nelkovski said.

Patrick O’Sullivan, Chief Bitcoin Officer for the Perth Heat, stated:

The Perth Heat have committed to operating under a bitcoin standard, and as a result, the corporate treasury has been converted from dollars to bitcoin.

“The club has already established an initial position in BTC,” he clarified. This is not a one-time purchase to protect against future risks or inflationary pressures. The Perth Heat have accepted that the future of money and corporate treasuries will reside on the Bitcoin blockchain.”
